WHAT IS THE NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS’ CONFERENCE?
The National Young Leaders’ conference is an annual event bringing together Young Leaders under the National Young Leaders’ fellowship to interact and share experiences with an aim of empowering them to serve their respective communities more effectively. The inspiration to hold this conference came with after the Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade of Uganda hosted the first International Young Leaders’ Workshop from the August 22nd -28th 2009 under the Global Fellowship of Christian Youths with the theme “Telling Our stories.”
Among the issues that were agreed upon in this workshop was establishing strong and efficient networks for Young Leaders within the designated nations and regions. Participants recommended that Regional Fellowships advocate for the establishment of National Fellowships to plan and coordinate national wide activities that enhance holistical development of young leaders.
The first National Young Leaders’ conference was held from the 15th to 19th of August 2010 at Lugazi Mixed Secondary School under the theme “Telling Our Stories.” The conference adopted the 2009 International Young Leaders’ Workshop theme but added a sub theme “Enhancing the capacity of Young people for development.” Over 100 participants across the country as well as the East African region including Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania shared their experiences and acquired practical leadership skills from various well selected, experienced facilitators.
2011 YOUNG LEADERS' CONFERENCE
The 2011 Young Leaders’ conference Theme
The 2011 theme “Faces of the World, Facing the World” embraces the cardinal need for people to come together in addressing the common human challenges. The theme acknowledges the diversity of human racial, religious, cultural and historical backgrounds but reckons for unity to address the common tests to human development.
The theme was adopted from the 2010 International Young Leaders’ Conference that was hosted in Accra Ghana from the 20th to 28th of August 2010.
THE SUBTHEME
“Communication a common challenge for young people.”
Communication is a pre-requisite for all social, economic and political progress in all societies. It is a conduit to channel all information necessary for development. Thus when working towards development, it is important to make communication efficient and effective. Similarly, when dealing with social protection a simplified but efficient mechanism of information exchange has to be established and maintained.
At both the individual and organizational levels, communication enhances a common understanding of the challenges affecting society. This makes it very easy to come up with possible remedies. However it is sad that young people have not been adequately sensitized about the basic framework of communication. Consequently, this has caused numerous problems including being left out in many development processes.
To bridge this gap and enhance more participation of the young people in the development process, this conference aims to empower young people by identifying the common communication challenges they face. Thereafter equip them with practical skills in communication that they can use to face the dynamic tests of communication.
